Over 200 athletes aged between 6 and 15 years took part in this year’s Karate National Championships which were held at National Sports School, Pembroke on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December.  Athletes competed in both kata (forms) and kumite (sparring).

“2018 was a challenging and rewarding year for Malta Karate Federation whereby our focus on ‘competitive karate’ was maintained. Regular training seminars were organized with Maestro Santo Torre 7th Dan for Kata and Sensei Junior Lefevre 6th Dan European and FMK World Champion for Kumite. These seminars provided the best training opportunities for our established as well as upcoming athletes. As part of the training program, our athletes competed and placed in international competitions namely Croatia, Germany, Sicily, San Marino and Poland. Our elite athletes were also present in Youth Olympic Games Qualifiers which were held in UMAG Croatia,” said MKF President Mr Kenneth Abela.

“Our focus for this year was also on the ‘traditional side’ of karate. To strengthen our karate philosophy and explore the spirit of traditional karate, technical director Sensei Jesmond Schembri together with Sensei James Galea visited Okinawa, along with another 4 black belts from the MKF. As part of this journey, we hosted traditional karate seminars by Sensei Chris Denwood and Sensei John Titchen. The skills and innovative methods learned through these seminars are invaluable.”

“Refereeing and national coaching have also been on our agenda for 2018. Susan Zammit, Cristina Tonna and Elizabeth Grech now form part of the Small States of Europe Karate Federation refereeing panel together with Sensei Anthony Zammit 6th Dan. Moreover, Sensei Michelle Vella and Sensei Tyler Tanti are now officially WKF Kata Coaches following examinations held earlier this month in Madrid, thus bringing the number of WKF approved local coaches to 4. Well done to all!” These were the comments of MKF Technical Director Jesmond Schembri.

Mr Kenneth Abela concluded by thanking Sportmalta and MOC for their constant support.

“Is-sena 2018 kienet sena ta’ sodisfazzjon kif ukoll ta’ impenn għall-MKF. Zammejna l’attenzjoni taghna fuq il-“karate kompetittiv” billi organizzajna tahrig regolari ma Maestro Santo Torre 7th Dan ghall-Kata kif ukoll ma Sensei Junior Lefevre 6th Dan ghall-Kumite ghall-atleti promittenti taghna. Bhala parti mill’programm ta’tahrig l’atleti taghna ippartecipaw f’diversi kompetizzjonijiet fejn kisbu rizultati tajbin hafna. Dawn saru gewwa il-Kroazja, il-Germanja, Sqallijja, San Marino u il-Polonja. “Dis-sena iffukajna ukoll fuq il-karate tradizzjonali, dan biex insahhu il-fiosofijja tal-karate kif ukoll biex nesploraw l’ispirtu veru tal-karate. Kienet din il-mira illi waslet biex id-Direttur Tekkniku Sensei Jesmond Schembri kif ukoll Sensei James Galea, flimkien ma erba Black Belts tal-MKF izuru l-Okinawa kif ukoll jorganizzaw tahrig specjalizzat gewwa Malta bl’assistenza ta’ Sensei Chris Denwood u Sensei John Titchen. Il-hiliet kif ukoll it-tahrig innovattiv illi niehdu minn dawn l’esperjenzi huma inprezzabbli” zied id-Direttur Tekkniku Sensei Jesmond Schembri.

“L’arbitragg kif ukoll il-kowcing kienu ukoll fuq l’agenda taghna ghall-2018. Susan Zammit, Cristina Tonna u Elizabeth Grech illum jiffurmaw parti mill-gurijja tal- Federazzjoni tal-Istati iz-Zghar tal-Ewropa flimkien ma Sensei Anthony Zammit 6th Dan. Kif ukoll Sensei Michelle Vella u Sensei Tyler Tanti illum huma ufficcjalment WKF kowcis tal-Kata wara li ghaddew minn ezamijiet gewwa Madrid li saru fix-xahar ta’ Novembru, biex b’hekk issa l-MKF ghandha 4 kowcis li huma approvati mid-WKF.
